I want to share my experience with going back to school in hopes that someone will get motivation or comfort in know they are not the only ones going back to school as an older adult.
Well on Thursday July 14 I started College to finish my 2 year degree. The last time I was in College it was in 1991. Wow have things changed. No longer do you need to spend all day on Campus walking from class to class. Spending your spare time in the Cafe doing homework. No more taking long drives to the campus. I am now sitting in the comfort of my home in my pajamas in front of my laptop and working on my assignments at my leisure, or well with in reason. There are still assignment deadlines but for the most part you have a week to meet the deadline.
Let me tell you a bit about myself.
I just turned 45 in June. I have a wonderful 6 yo daughter and a am Married. I have lived in Texas for 9.5 years. I was born in Orange County California and lived there until I moved to Texas. I Lost both my parents when I was 29 and as a result of that had some personal issues that caused me to not make the best decisions. Since moving out to Texas, I have done nothing but move forward and upward. About 3 years ago I had Weight Loss Surgery and lost over 100 lbs and been able to maintain that weight loss. I admin a group on Facebook for the South East Area of Houston where I had lived for most of my 8 years here in Texas. I am very active in my Daughters life and school activities. I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to work from home and spend time with my family.
While in California. I managed and Italian restaurant for 10 years and for 8 years I worked various special projects admin for Southern California Edison Electric. Upon moving out to Texas I was eventually hired by a contract agency that provides contractors to IBM corporation. I have been working with them for the last 9 years as a Project Coordinator. I support a Project Manager that oversees a 3 level help desk. Within the last two years I have also been working Retail clothing at the local mall. I love getting out from behind the computer and talking to people. I finally decided that when my daughter would start school so would I. And here I am a year late but I have finally started school again and my Daughter will be going into 1st Grade.
I want to finally get my 2 year degree for a variety of reasons. So I can my father proud as he looks down upon me. So that I can move upward in my current career. And so my value as an employee wiill increase along with my compensation. I love my job but want to eventually become a project manager.
I am attending Lone Star College, that has campuses all over the north side of Houston Metro area. You can find out more about them at the following link:
